ZOOLOGICAL CONSERVATION: Rare pregnancy of weedy sea dragon at Georgia Aquarium

Weedy sea dragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) have reproduced at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. This is only the third time such reproduction has taken place since the biological and ecological conditions that trigger reproduction of this species are unknown. Weedy and leafy sea dragons, seahorses, and pipefish belong to the family Syngnathidae where the female lays her eggs and the male fertilizes and carries them. Sea dragons are rare in aquarium collections and many species are threatened by human activities. The male weedy sea dragon from the Georgia Aquarium in the images above is carrying the eggs on his tail. More information at the International Herald Tribune. Both images above are AP Photos/John Bazemore. The weedy sea dragon image below was taken at the Georgia Aquarium by Flickr user dro!d.
