NATURE: African lions utilize paved roads to bring down giraffes

African lions (Panthera leo) are adaptable, tenacious, and persistent social predators. It seems that lions are taking advantage of paved road to bring down giraffes. Apparently, the pavement renders a giraffe slightly awkward or somewhat disabled. The animal can still run and walk on the pavement; however, the even-toed ungulates are disadvantaged enough to give the lions an advantage. According to Tetrapod Zoology, giraffes “apparently run slower, get less traction, and are hence easier to bring down.” Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) are formidable prey, since they grow large and tall. Furthermore, they produce powerful kicks as a defense mechanism.

A very shaky video below, which is not for the seasick types, shows some lions bringing down a giraffe on a paved road. I first came across this story at Tetrapod Zoology where further information and images on the topic can be found.
