FOOD: Sell less perfect fruits and vegetables to alleviate the energy and food crisis?

Restrictions exist on oddly shaped fruits and vegetables that are too big, small, or ugly. However, easing these restrictions within the European Union and United States may help alleviate the food crisis because tiny imperfections may leave indistinguishable (appearance and taste) fruit and vegetables second rate.

Anyone who has ever shopped at a market in developing or even developed countries understands the difference between produce sold in those markets and supermarket chains. Supermarkets in developed countries sell large, perfect, shiny, but often tasteless fruits and vegetables. However, consumers should have the right to buy whatever fruits and vegetables they want. Personally, I love buying produce from the farmer’s market near my home because it’s often cheaper and seemingly more natural. Furthermore, I am often supporting local businesses or farmers.

Most shoppers in America and the EU may have become desensitized or unaware of how produces reaches their supermarkets. However, the system is inefficient. Furthermore, problems still arise from perfect fruits and vegetables. The restrictions should be revisited to alleviate the energy and food crises; therefore, promote efficiency. It’s another no-brainer our governments can be promoting.

The YouTube video below shows how one supermarket chain Waitrose is attempting to market less perfect produce to its consumers who often demand such produce for certain cooking activities or canning.
