BOTTLED WATER: Where does bottled water come from? Tap’dNY will tell you how far particular bottled water brands had to travel to get to NY

tapdny1tapdnyTap’dNY works “with NYC’s public water system to source the world’s best tasting tap water, purify it through reverse osmosis and bottle it locally, leaving out ludicrous transportation miles.”  Reverse osmosis water is water in its purest possible form, so the process removes impurities, minerals, and pollutants from water to leave it so pure that it’s used in saltwater reef tanks (corals and other reef organisms can be sensitive to impure water conditions).

A reader of my blog wrote to me regarding a tool provided by Tap’dNY that tells New Yorkers (or anyone) how far it took for particular brands of bottled water to reach New York City (think food miles or bottled water miles in this case):

Hey Buck, saw what you wrote about Tapdny – the local NY water – a while back on the blog and it stuck with me. Anyway, I met the owner at this green drinks thing in Brooklyn on Wed and I thought you’d be interested to know he seems to be legit in his desire to lessen the carbon footprint with a local product. He’s even got this text system in place where if you send “where is” and any bottled water name to 30644 it tells you how far that bottle had to travel to get to NY. I haven’t read about it anywhere…

I sent this text, “where is Aquafina” to 30644, and I received this reply immediately:

Who knows where Pepsi water originates. They’ll tell you it’s a public water source (i.e. tap), but where those mountains live is a mystery.

Then I tried “where is Evian,” and I got this response:

Evian’s source is over 4000 miles from NYC. That’s 2,532 times around Central Park’s reservoir. Drink smarter. Drink local.

Then “where is Nestlé” produced this response:

Huh? Text WHEREIS and the name of a water TAPDNY (spell it right), and Tap’dNY will tell you how far it had to travel to get to NY. Drink local. Drink smart.

What about Dasani?:

Who knows? Coke admits Dasani’s tap water, but you’ll have to call about each individual bottle for source. Why drink a myster when you could drink local?

And of course TAPDNY:

Tap’dNY starts with New York tap. Sure we purify it, but it’s still New York’s finest at it’s best. And it’s local; the better option.
