CONSERVATION: Entire Alligator River now protected

Something that escaped my radar, which should be celebrated was the “$8.2 million acquisition of the last large unprotected tract along the Alligator River, which flows through Tyrrell and Dare counties [of North Carolina] into the Albemarle Sound.” The Alligator River is an important ecosystem, and the area is home to the critically endangered red wolf (Canis rufus), although “hybridization with Coyotes or Red Wolf x Coyote hybrids is the primary threat to the species’ persistence in the wild.” More about this conservation achievement can be found at the Raleigh News & Observer.
