GREEN ENERGY: Jones Soda Co. goes off the grid for Earth Day

Burning and converting stored fat and calories into energy that runs computers, fax machines, lights, and electricity—that’s what the employees at Jones Soda did by using cyclists on Earth Day to power its Seattle headquarters. From the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

Employees and others at the soda pop company began pedaling at 5 a.m. Wednesday, taking turns on nine stationery bikes hooked up to batteries to store the energy.

“We’ve actively been working on improving sustainability across the entire company,” said CEO-elect Joth Ricci. This was a good way to kick off an initiative to conserve electricity and reduce packaging waste, he said.

One cyclist pedaling at a comfortable pace could generate about 200 watts an hour, enough to run a medium-sized TV or a dishwasher without the heat dry.

To supplement the human-powered energy, the company also dialed back its electricity consumption. It turned off lights in the office, except lights in the restrooms, which were run by the bicycles. And employees huddled with laptops in two main rooms to take advantage of natural light from a skylight and windows.

The event brought out environmentalists, cycling enthusiasts and other curious gawkers.

Charlie Weber, 26, of Spokane, was cycling past the company’s office when event volunteers flagged him down and asked him to take a spin on one of the bikes. He rode for about 20 minutes.

“It’s a great way to get people aware of Earth Day,” said the medical resident at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. “A good, healthy way to do it.”

ENERGY CONSERVATION: Empire State Building to get a green renovation

empire-state-buildingThese renovations to the Empire State Building will save millions each year through energy conservation. From the New York Times:

Once the world’s tallest building, the Empire State Building is striving for another milestone: It is going green.

Owners of the New York City landmark announced on Monday that they will be beginning a renovation this summer expected to reduce the skyscraper’s energy use by 38 percent a year by 2013, at an annual savings of $4.4 million. The retrofit project will add $20 million to the $500 million building makeover already under way that aims to attract larger corporate occupants at higher rents.

REPUBLICAN WAR ON REGULATION: Robert Redford speaks out about President Bush’s last minute attempt to weaken environmental legislation

Rachel Maddow Show: Robert Redford Interview Nov. 24, 2008

President Bush’s contempt for the environment and environmentalism raises its ugly head via his eleventh hour attacks on environmental regulations. His attempt to weaken environmental legislation is reckless and dangerous, because he is meddling with a movement that he can’t comprehend. Surely, he knows that Obama, the new Senate, and the new Congress will work to overturn these rule changes, so Bush is certainly behaving callously.

Furthermore, President Bush also knows that our country is currently focused with other pressing matters, so he may be taking advantage of tough times to impose his narrow and misguided ideology. President Bush’s repeals and weakening of environmental regulation may give irresponsible developers and polluters an opportunity to start projects and show reliance by investing time and resources. Therefore, these projects will be difficult to stop or reverse. What’s more, Obama may not be able to overturn most of Bush’s malfeasance right away, because in order to reverse President Bush’s malfeasance, any proposed responses or remedies will have to go through the administrative process (like the commenting period) before any changes can be reversed. However, Obama will at least have competent people running the country, so we can return to being a progressive country. Certainly, President Bush merely put our country backwards many years.
