The U.S. military’s consumption of energy makes the U.S. government the largest consumer of energy, so the government can certainly be doing a lot to improve consumption, offset unsustainable consumption, or promote sustainable consumption. Former President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the White House, but Former President Ronald Reagan took them down. Perhaps Obama will once again integrate solar energy into the White House. It’s important to lead by example, and Obama has said before that he wants to modernize the government auto fleet by using more hybrid, PHEV, and fuel-efficient cars. From The Associated Press:

President-elect Barack Obama says he wants to make the White House “green.” In an interview with Barbara Walters, Obama said he plans to sit down with the chief usher for the presidential mansion and do an evaluation of its energy efficiency.

He says part of what he wants to do is show the American people that it’s not that hard to go green.

I believe ballot initiatives or propositions can be dangerous, because entities like the Mormon Church can provide vast amounts of resources and manipulate information in order to impose their agenda; therefore abuse of the system is possible. 

Certainly, we saw this with Prop 8, which unfortunately passed and banned same sex marriage under a simple majority. The Mormon Church, although centralized in Utah, donated $20 million to Prop 8. As a result of its interference and support, some believe the Mormon Church should be stripped of its tax-exempt status, while others believe the focus should not be on the Mormon Church.

However, if an entity is going to donate great amounts of resources and time to one initiative, then it should be prepared for the consequences. Furthermore, why does a group like the Mormon Church—that receives a tax-exempt status—have a right to interfere with another group by taking away their rights; and the disadvantaged group must pay taxes to entities (the state and federal governments), which don’t recognize their rights? It’s blatantly unfair.

Unlike, Prop 8, Prop 10 did not pass. Prop 10 was also known as the California Alternative Fuels Initiative, which was closely connected to T. Boone Pickens. Prop 10 would have provided “$3.425 billion to help consumers and others purchase certain high fuel economy or alternative fuel vehicles, including natural gas vehicles, and to fund research into alternative fuel technology.” T. Boone Pickens had a direct stake in Prop 10, because his company, Clean Energy Fuels Corp., could have provided natural gas for these alternative fuel vehicles. As a result, Pickens with his corporation “contributed nearly $19 million” to the ballot effort. Although it failed, it’s still a lot of money that can be used for misinformation. The fact is, we don’t need to replace one fossil fuel with another, especially since electric vehicle, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technologies are becoming more efficient.  Natural gas has its place as an alternative fuel—possibly in the trucking industry—but not on the large scale that Pickens seeks.

It seems like ballot proposals are democracy in action, but they aren’t. Outsiders with an interest or stake in these initiatives can unfairly disadvantage certain groups by donating resources and using misinformation to rally their efforts. For these reasons, I believe our elected officials and the courts are the best routes to take for change.

MarketWatch provides more information regarding the failure of Prop 10:

“California voters didn’t fall for a Texas oil tycoon’s $10 billion money grab, no matter how much he spent camouflaging it as green,” stated Richard Holober, spokesman for the No on Prop 10 campaign, and Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California. “Proposition 10 is the ultimate example of a wealthy special interest abusing the ballot initiative process to enrich itself. We built a coalition of major environmental, consumer, business, labor, taxpayer and civic organizations that triumphed over Prop 10’s $23 million war chest. The defeat of Prop 10 sends a signal that California’s ballot initiative process is not for sale to the highest bidder.”

Mr. Pickens’ Clean Energy Fuels Corporation contributed nearly $19 million to the Yes on Prop 10 campaign. Chesapeake Energy and its owner Aubrey McClendon donated $3.5 million to the Yes on 10 campaign. Clean Energy is the nation’s largest operator of natural gas fueling stations, and Chesapeake is the largest independent producer of natural gas in the U.S. Both corporations would have made a fortune under Prop 10’s multibillion dollar giveaway program to create a market for natural gas-fueled trucks.

The No on Prop 10 campaign raised about $170,000.

The defeat of Proposition 10 is the first test of voter support for the self-styled “Pickens Plan.” News reports state that Mr. Pickens has spent $58 million on national television ads since July promoting his plan. One key component of his plan is the conversion of vehicles to run on natural gas. Pickens Plan ads do not spell out who pays for this conversion, and who benefits from it.

Obama’s energy plan is common sense, since part of his energy plan tackles the federal government. As a former federal government contractor, I noticed a lot of waste—especially how government vehicles are used. Certainly, a large portion of government travel can use either smaller, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Furthermore, he is calling for conservation, and there is nothing wrong with conservation if it promotes reasonable consumption.

An energy plan using electric, hybrid, and PHEVs is far superior to T. Boone Pickens’s plan to put a lot of energy and money to develop the infrastructure for natural gas-powered vehicles. Natural gas is another fossil fuel, but it produces less energy. Personally, I don’t believe we need new coal power plants, and clean coal doesn’t exist. Other highlights of Obama’s energy plan include: (1) developing America’s renewable energy infrastructure thus (2) create green jobs, (3) using cap-and-trade programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and (4) eliminate or reduce our energy imports. Obama also wants to promote energy conservation and efficiency by updating our current electrical grid to smart grid technology. From MarketWatch:

According to President-elect Obama’s website (www.barackobama.com), the Obama-Biden plan aims to “make the U.S. a leader on climate change” and to “put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars — cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon — on the road by 2015.” Other goals of the Obama-Biden plan include:

– Invest $150 billion over 10 years to accelerate the commercialization of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), commercial scale renewable energy, low emissions coal plants, the next generation of fuel infrastructure and the transition to a new digital electricity grid

– Convert the entire White House fleet to plug-ins within Obama’s first year of office

– Ensure that half of all cars purchased by the federal government be PHEVs or EVs by 2012

– Provide a $7,000 tax credit for the purchase of advanced technology vehicles as well as conversion tax credits

– Require 10% of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2012

Two myths republicans like to perpetuate regarding the environment debunked:

(1) Proponents for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) argue that the environmental footprint will only cover a small portion or the 2,000 acres of ANWR. True or False? FALSE! The infrastructure to get into and get out of those alleged 2,000 acres will threaten areas outside of the 2,000 acres. Furthermore, once Big Oil and republicans have those 2,000 acres, it’s a slippery slope from there for all of ANWR.  From Natural Resources Defense Council:

Close examination, however, reveals that the oil industry could not possibly develop the coastal plain in a compact, contiguous 2,000-acre area, and the way the amendment was worded would open up the entire refuge coastal plain to development, which would damage it permanently. Below is a look at the realities of the “2,000-acre footprint.”

Oil Infrastructure Would Spread Across the Coastal Plain

The relatively little economically recoverable oil in the refuge is not concentrated in one large reservoir within a 2,000-acre area but is spread across its 1.5-million-acre coastal plain in more than 30 small deposits, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.¹ To produce oil from this vast area, supporting infrastructure would have to stretch across the coastal plain. Networks of pipelines and roads obviously would fragment wildlife habitat. The oil field industrial sprawl on the North Slope provides a relevant example. Including drill sites, airports and roads, and gravel mines, it has a footprint of 12,000 acres, but it actually spreads across an area of more than 640,000 acres, or 1,000 square miles. . . .

Proponents of drilling in the refuge also point to the 100-acre Alpine oil field west of Prudhoe Bay as the state-of-the-art model for developing the refuge. But the 2,000-acre “limitation” would allow 20 oil fields the size of Alpine scattered across the refuge’s coastal plain.

Even if the 2,000 acres were contiguous, such an area could cover a lot of ground. For example, the 12-lane-wide New Jersey Turnpike, which stretches more than 100 miles across the state, covers only 1,773 acres.

(2) The mining process to extract raw materials for electric, hybrid or PHEV car batteries is environmentally destructive; therefore, negating subsequent environmental benefits.  True or False? FALSE! From Grist:

The manufacturing process for a Prius is more energy intensive than the process for a non-hybrid of its size. However, according to research from Toyota, the Argonne National Laboratory, and the Rocky Mountain Institute, to name a few, the fuel savings you get in a hybrid more than make up for the initial eco-hit.
